"Many universities are civically engaged but are not necessarily civic universities. Only when they have a place鈥慴ased, strategic approach can they be considered 'truly civic universities'鈥.
This was a principal message in the final report of the UPP Foundation鈥檚 Civic University Commission, and in Spring 2023 the University signed its first Civic University Agreements with five of our neighbouring local authorities:
- Hampshire County Council
- Southampton City Council
- Winchester City Council
- Eastleigh Borough Council
- Test Valley Borough Council
The University has always aimed to create positive impact in the Central South region, but this was the first time the senior leadership of the University gathered with highly valued partners and stakeholders to make a public commitment to work together in support of the economic, environmental, social and cultural success of our Southern region.
How we work
Through using research, expert knowledge, innovation, and partnership, we aim to transform lives and livelihoods across Hampshire and the Solent.
Our civic contribution draws on the University of Southampton鈥檚 internationally recognised strengths in research and the application of that research in everyday life.
In our region we strive to:
- step up to shared challenges and opportunities to drive economic growth
- create and maintain prosperous and culturally rich places for living and working
- protect and enhance the region鈥檚 natural environment
- support the health and social well-being of the region鈥檚 people
